Part 4 – Develop the student learning activity
A. Describe the learning activity. What will students be asked to do with the Thinkfinity learning object(s)?
The whole class will be reinforced with the lesson on order of operations. It is a refresher, so they will learn it again, learn it for the first time, and have fun doing the activity.
B. Describe how the learning activity will address students’ individual needs – Differentiation
The students will review the lesson on PEMDAS (order of operations) using the bingo game. Students, who already know what they are required to do will work ( play ) in small groups. Students, who are still having difficulty with the concept, will do the same activity, but they will work with the teacher. The NON-English speakers will work with partners (peer tutor), so they are able to be successful and learn from a knowledgeable peer.
C. Effectiveness – What indicators can you expect to see / hear from students, which will inform you about the effectiveness of the learning activity?
The teacher will walk around and monitor the students’ progress. If students are having difficulty. The activity will be stopped and the teacher will review the purpose of the activity. The teacher will review the skills to know in order to achieve the goal of the activity, which is to get bingo. Students should be able to do the process mental and easily to fill in the bingo cards. The students should be able to have their card filled half way if the game has progressed with ease.
Part 5 – Do a complete trial run of the learning activity you described in step 3D.
Reflect on the learning activity.
Considerations:
The activity will help determine if the students learned their PEMDAS lesson. If the game is unsuccessful, then the lesson on order of operations needs to be reevaluated. It will be re-taught. The activity will be used at a later date, when the teacher feels that the students are able to successful play it.
Part 6 – Consider the bigger picture
Describe how this learning activity fits within a lesson or unit plan, to meet objectives that will be assessed.
NOTE: Information about additional learning activities or materials that will be used to complement this learning activity may be included.
This activity is great for review. The activity is a game, which students are well aware of its objective. The game helps the teacher see what the students know and still have a gap in the lesson. The students have fun and show off the ability to mentally produce the answer and win the game. The game can also be modified to fit students at different levels and pace. Everyone can feel successful and enjoy playing the order of operations bingo game.
